The Value of Lunchtime in the Early Years Foundation Stage
Lunchtime is a valuable learning experience for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Meals are important times for learning about being with others, taking turns and making choices. Children learn how to chop their own food and manipulate cutlery. They help lay the table, pour their own drinks and help to tidy things away.
Lunchtime is an enjoyable social time and children are encouraged to partake in polite chit chat and are taught basic table manners in a relaxed homely atmosphere.
What Makes a Healthy Packed Lunch
Healthy packed lunches can include the following or similar items: protein filled sandwiches or tortilla wraps such as tuna, chicken, ham or cheese; salads; yoghurts; carrot sticks and pasta. In addition, in place of a dessert you may like to provide a piece of fruit, a small cupcake or plain biscuit. Please do not include sweets.
Water is provided by the school, however you can provide your child with water to drink but not sweet sugared or fizzy drinks.
Please ensure your child’s packed lunch does not include nuts as we do have nut allergy sufferers in school.
Homework
Year 1
Homework is handed out on a Friday and is due back every Wednesday. Pupils will have either a Maths or English task to complete each week, along with phonics/spellings and reading activities.
Children will bring home one levelled book and one book to read for pleasure each week. Please encourage your child to read each day.
Year 2
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and is due back every Wednesday. Pupils will have a Maths and English task to complete each week, along with phonics and spellings. Children will bring home one levelled book and one book to read for pleasure each week. Please encourage your child to read each day. There will be occasions where the children will be given additional homework from the wider curriculum, and children will be able to complete this work independently.
Year 3
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and is due back by Wednesday. Pupils will have a Maths and Spellings task each week.
They are also expected to read every day and keep their reading record book up to date. They will choose a new reading book when they are ready. They should be commenting in their books each day, so teachers can see their reading progress. They will not be able to choose another book, if they haven’t returned the one they have borrowed.
Please also make sure that they are logging into Times Tables Rock Stars each day.
Year 4
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and is due back by Wednesday. Pupils will have a Maths and Spellings task each week.
They are also expected to read every day and keep their reading record book up to date. If your child needs to change their reading book, there will be assigned days in each class that they will change their book. Please make sure that they are reading and completing their reading record each time they have read. As well as logging into Times Tables Rock Stars to continue practising their times tables.
Year 5
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and is due back before Wednesday. Pupils will have a Maths and English task to complete each week and are expected to read every day and ensure their reading record book is signed by an adult at least three times every week. Pupils are also expected to practice their mental maths skills each week by using their school log in and username for https://www.sumdog.com and to take part in the weekly competitions or challenges.
Year 6
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and is due back before Wednesday. Pupils will have a Maths and English task to complete each week and are expected to read every day and ensure their reading record book is signed by an adult at least three times every week. Pupils are also expected to practice their mental maths skills each week by using their school log in and username for https://www.sumdog.com and to take part in the weekly competitions or challenges. Year 6 pupils may receive additional homework tasks throughout the year to prepare them for KS2 SATS and transition to secondary school.
Safeguarding
At Eglinton Primary School and Early Years Centre we establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk, and are listened to when they have a worry or concern. Children know that there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried. We believe our school is a place where staff and volunteers feel safe, are encouraged to talk and are listened to when they have concerns about the safety and well-being of a child. We include opportunities in the PSHE curriculum for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from harm.
Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other professionals when there are concerns about a child's welfare. We will ensure that our concerns are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child's welfare. Staff are trained to identify when a child may be at risk of neglect, abuse or exploitation and they report any concerns to the designated child protection officer using the agreed format. In addition to statutory duties we acknowledge that the school has pastoral responsibility towards all its children. Through our vigilance we aim to help build a stronger, safer community.
